In our short history, we have managed to achieve a lot. Here are some of our accomplishments so far.
Development
We have actively represented and supported the residents at Committee of Adjustment [COA] and Toronto Local Appeal Body [TLAB] to oppose development that would be detrimental to the Character of Long Branch (e.g. lot severances and other forms of overbuilding).
While we do not charge members for our efforts, it is worth noting that Developer Applicants typically have to pay over $25,000 to lawyers to represent them at TLAB, and the Planners that also represent them receive similar compensation. Pretty good value for our $15 membership fee!
To date, we have been successful in seven out of seven development applications!
Tree Canopy Preservation
We have applied for and received $125,000 in government grant money from all levels of government and with this we have:
- Distributed over 1,000 free trees and shrubs to residents and schools through Tree for Me and the Long Branch Remembers [honouring Veterans] programs.
- Organized and hosted the first annual Long Branch Tree Fest in Marie Curtis Park in 2019 with over 1,000 attendees and over 50 exhibitors and vendors
- In partnership with University of Toronto Faculty of Forestry, initiated a multi-year tree inventory project to measure and monitor the tree canopy in Long Branch, which is declining due to development.
- Worked with Community Council to improve tree protection bylaws and support Toronto’s goal for achieve a 40% tree canopy
- Employed 14 students over the past three summers through our Long Branch Tree Stewardship Program to support, protect and enhance our valuable tree canopy
- Achieved official status through Forests Ontario for 3 Heritage Trees in Long Branch
