Description
Chokeberry is a deciduous shrub from the Rosaceae family that spreads freely and suckers profusely. Chokeberry is well adapted to many soil types, including sandy and rocky soils. Chokeberry is excellent for stabilization and erosion control. Chokeberry shrubs usually grow in wet areas or alongside streams, bogs, etc.
Newly emerging leaves in spring have a reddish tinge turning glossy green throughout the summer. It grows well in the sun and part-shade, often to heights of six feet or more, forming clumps through stems rising from the roots. Its white or pink flowers appear at the end of spring and produce black fruits in September. The fruit is edible though very astringent, and is produced from 5-6 flowered clusters that bloom in late spring.
